Vision Evaluation
Vision Evaluation

Twenty-first century lifestyles demand more from our vision than ever before.  Adults in our technological society constantly use their near vision at work and at home.  Environmental stresses on the visual system (including excessive computer use or close work) can sometimes induce headaches and/or visual difficulties which can be effectively treated with corrective lenses. Regular vision examinations are important for the prevention of vision problems created or aggravated by today's academic and professional demands.

Your vision is evaluated by the optometrist using a method called refraction. Refraction is a clinical test in which a series of test lenses in graded optical powers are presented to determine which lens power provides the sharpest and clearest vision. This will determine if you are nearsighted or farsighted, with or without astigmatism.

At Merchant Eyecare, we understand that your life’s visual needs are as unique as you are!  Our experienced eye health professionals offer comprehensive vision care with a commitment to improve the quality of life through enhanced vision.

The American Optometric Association recommends that pre-school children receive a complete vision exam at the ages of six months, three years and five years.  It is particularly important that a child have a complete evaluation in the summer prior to entry into Kindergarten.  While in school, yearly evaluations are recommended. We see children as young as 3 years of age at Merchant Eyecare.

Eye Health Evaluation
Eye Health Evaluation

A complete evaluation not only consists of a vision exam, but also includes a complete eye health evaluation. Your eye health evaluation may be the most important part of the comprehensive eye exam.

Some eye conditions do not cause immediate obvious changes in a patients' vision. Therefore, regularly scheduled eye examinations allow the doctor to evaluate the current status of the patients' eye health, as well as look for any sight threatening conditions which could occur in the future. The professional doctors at Merchant eyecare evaluate risk factors, clinical signs, and patient symptoms to determine the presence of conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, retinal tears and detachment and/or  disorders of the optic nerve.

Signs of systemic diseases can also be seen through an ocular health evaluation. Two of the most common systemic diseases, Diabetes and Hypertension, can cause significant vision loss if left untreated. As well as other systemic conditions like Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Thyroid disease that can be detected and managed by annual eye health evaluations.

Visual Field Testing
Visual Field Testing

A visual field test is a method of measuring an individual's entire scope of vision, that is their central and peripheral vision. Visual field testing actually maps the visual fields of each eye individually. It is most frequently used to detect any signs of glaucoma damage to the optic nerve. In addition, visual field tests are useful for detection of central or peripheral retinal disease, eyelid conditions such as ptosis or drooping, optic nerve disease, and diseases affecting the visual pathways within the brain. The visual pathways carry information from the eye to the visual or occipital cortex in the brain, where this information is processed into vision.

Dilation
Dilation

Dilation is the process of using pharmaceutical eye drops that dilate the pupils large enough that allow the optometrist to view the interior of the eye for any potential harmful eye diseases before they become problematic. The eye is the window to the body because it is the only organ that we can view your arteries and veins without surgery. Thus, there are a lot of systemic diseases that can be detected from the dilation of your eyes... think of it as your annual health physical for the eye.
